About Bristol Yachts

Bristol Yachts was founded by Clinton Pearson, who had started Pearson Yachts with his cousin Everett. Clinton left Pearson in 1964, bought a struggling sailboat builder called Sailstar in West Warwick, Rhode Island, and made the Carl Alberg-designed Bristol 27 his first boat; the Bristol Yacht Company name followed in 1966. The yard later settled in Bristol, Rhode Island, and Bristol became one of the first commercially successful builders of production fiberglass sailboats.

Bristols were designed by Carl Alberg, John Alden, Halsey Herreshoff, Paul Coble, Dieter Empacher and Ted Hood, all working toward tough, no-nonsense cruising sailboats. The Bristol 27, like most Bristols, was very heavily built, with a solid, hand-laid fiberglass hull, and many of these boats are still sailing today. Bristol Yachts were built until 1997, when the company closed in bankruptcy.
