Californian yachts from our own listings first, then the wider market.
Jule Marshall's Marshall Boat Company built the first Californian yachts in 1972 in Orange County, California. One early success was the Californian 42 LRC (long range cruiser), built for nine years. The line then changed hands several times: Wellcraft bought it in 1982, Marshall bought it back in 1987 and sold it that year to Carver, which moved production to North Carolina, and Californian production stopped after Genmar bought Carver in 1991.
In 1988 Marshall founded Navigator Yachts in Perris, California, to build raised pilothouse yachts. He later reacquired the Californian name, and Navigator built a new generation of Californians alongside its own models. Both lines were built with solid fiberglass hulls, with no core. At the end of 2012 Navigator was sold to a private equity group and renamed Navigator Yachts and Products, and Marshall is no longer involved.
