About Hatteras Yachts

Hatteras Yachts dates to 1959, when founder Willis Slane wanted a sportfishing boat that could handle the rough water off Cape Hatteras. The result, the 41-foot convertible Knit Wits, was built of fiberglass when most boats were still made of wood. Based in New Bern, North Carolina, Hatteras built both sportfishing convertibles and motor yachts. Since White River Marine Group bought the company in 2021, Hatteras has concentrated on sportfishing yachts, and its current models are 48 and 77 feet.

In response to the fuel shortages of the mid-1970s, Hatteras added a series of long range cruisers, or LRCs. These displacement-hull yachts were designed by Jack Hargrave and used smaller engines for economical cruising at lower speeds. The series ran from 42 to 65 feet, with 42, 48, 58 and 65 LRC models, and Hatteras built LRCs until 1985.
