Hunter sailboats from our own listings first, then the wider market.
Hunter Marine was started in 1973 in Alachua, Florida, by Warren Luhrs, whose family built powerboats on the New Jersey coast; by the early 1960s Warren, his brother John and their father, Henry, were building more than a thousand a year. Hunter's first boat was a 25-foot sloop designed by John Cherubini, and the company went on to build sailboats ranging from trailerable daysailers of about 15 feet to cruising boats of more than 50 feet.
At its peak Hunter built 1,400 sailboats a year. After a 2012 bankruptcy, the company was bought by David Marlow, owner of Marlow Yachts, and renamed Marlow-Hunter, which kept building selected Hunter models in Alachua. That production ended in 2021, when Marlow sold the Alachua plant to a pontoon-boat builder.
