Monk trawlers from our own listings first, then the wider market.
The Monk 36 trawler was designed by Ed Monk Jr., son of the Seattle naval architect Ed Monk Sr., and it helped make the trawler a popular cruising boat in the 1980s. The first boats were built in Taiwan beginning in the early 1980s and sold through North Sea Yachts of New Jersey. In the early 1990s production moved to Nova Scotia, where Cape Island Yachts of Clarks Harbour built the boats. The last hull was a 2008 model, and more than 250 were built.
The Monk 36 is just under 40 feet overall, with a semi-displacement hull and a full keel that protects the propeller and rudder. Most have a single diesel: Taiwan-built boats usually carried a 135-hp Perkins or 150-hp Cummins, while later boats with a 210- to 220-hp Cummins cruise at 9 to 10 knots. Interiors are finished in teak, with a master stateroom aft and a V-berth forward, each with its own head. Ed Monk Jr. also designed Ocean Alexander's first yacht, the Mark I of 1978.
