Pearson yachts from our own listings first, then the wider market.
Pearson Yachts grew out of a garage in Seekonk, Massachusetts, where cousins Clinton and Everett Pearson began building fiberglass dinghies in 1955. Their first true sailing yacht was the Triton 28, designed by Carl Alberg, which debuted at the New York Boat Show in January 1959; the cousins left the show with orders for 17 boats. The Triton was one of the first fiberglass cruising sailboats, and more than 700 were built.
The company grew quickly, moving into the old Herreshoff yard in Bristol, Rhode Island, and later a large plant in Portsmouth. Grumman Allied Industries bought a controlling interest in 1961, and the cousins left during the 1960s. Bill Shaw, hired in 1964, later ran the company and designed many of its boats. Grumman sold Pearson to a private investor group in 1986, and the company went bankrupt in 1991. Everett Pearson's company, TPI, later bought the Pearson Yachts name.
